Dubai is the most beautiful city I have been to. You can take a vacation or business trip and you can as well do the two together in this amazing city. Like I promised, I thought to share my experience to help anyone in business who’s been planning to import goods from Dubai. You will find almost everything you want and it’s not a tedious process like going to China or Turkey (I’ll do a post about my business trip experience to China and Turkey in a few weeks for anyone interested in importing from these two countries). But, first things first.
You can get your visa through a travel agent while I also know Ethiopian Airline and KQ can process the visa for you if you are using their airline.
Booking your Flight
I always find Ethiopian Airline to be fair, but there are a lot more Airlines you can try depending on your budget. Air Arabia is cheaper especially if you are starting out and you prefer to spend less on transport (check out my previous post; My Dubai Experience/Travel Tips to find out more about Air Arabia).
Where to stay
There are many hotels in Deira that will cost you about ksh4000 for bed and breakfast. Since Deira is where your shopping will be centered, it will be easy for you if you stay in this area your first time. Some travel agents who process visa can also help you find a place to stay before you travel.
Where to shop
The shops where you will shop in bulk are mostly in Deira. You will find almost everything here, there is a street for everything; shoes, bedding, clothes, bags, perfumes and many many more.
This is a big mall with many shops that sell everything you might need and on wholesale too, for example; shoes, clothes, perfumes, building materials, hand bags, accessories, toys, event items, hair, curtains, bedding just to name a few.
There are sale seasons in Dubai, if you visit during these times you will always find quality stuff at very reduced prices in the malls. For example, the major sales are in the months of January, April , July and maybe October too throughout the city.
There are several shipping companies you can use, I have used African Salihiya before so I would recommend them anytime. These companies are also within Deira.
Sending by air is fast, takes about 7 days, and therefore you will spend more. I’d recommend it if you do not have so many goods.
Sending by sea is cheaper but definitely takes longer, say like a month. If you have a lot to ship then this is the best option.
Once your goods arrive in Nairobi, you will be called to pick them from Eastleigh, usually my goods are brought to my door step at a small fee (the hustle of driving to Eastleigh is hectic)
How to move around:
If you choose to live in Deira, transport will not be a problem because it’s walking distance from the shops to your hotel.
To go to the malls you can take metro or bus to connect to places not covered by metro. There is a metro station at Deira too.
FYI: Once you are done buying from one shop you can leave whatever you bought at that particular shop and they will deliver the package to the shipping company for you then you can go follow up later or you can take them with you to your hotel (this does not apply to the malls though).
If you don’t want to experience the Dubai cuisine, you will find lots of restaurants selling delicious African dishes in Deira.
Feel free to ask me any questions, I’ll be ready to help where I can.
Thanks for stopping by.
